S (Scripture) – 2 John 1:1-4,6,9 “The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth, for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received commandment to do from the Father…And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it…Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.”
O (Observation) – John uses the word “truth” five times and the word “love” three times in a matter of six verses when addressing this topic of “walking according to His commandments.” God loves us with an everlasting love, and He desires to have fellowship with His children. If our own children blatantly lived in opposition to everything that we instructed them to do, we would question whether or not they really loved us. We expect them to obey us because of our love for them, and the fact that we know more than they do, and have their best interests at heart. How much more should we want to show our love for our Heavenly Father who loves us though we don’t deserve it, gave everything for us, and knows infinitely more than we do by being obedient to Him?
A (Application) – When we choose to intentionally walk away from His commands, we are not walking in the truth. First, we must recognize that God is love, and His Word is truth. Jesus said in John 18:37, “…For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Those of us who claim the name of Christ are not perfect, and will make mistakes along the journey of life. We will feel convicted by the Holy Spirit (not condemned, but convicted), and will turn away from that behavior because we love God and want to obey Him when He gives us a command. We will not knowingly continue to live in sin if we are walking and abiding in the truth.
P (Prayer) – Thank You, Jesus, that You love us. There is no one like You. No one can love like You love us. Help us to draw ever closer to You, and guide us each moment of the day. May we desire more and more of Your truth – show us when we are not walking in truth and love. Help us to turn and follow You so that we can be blessed by all You have for us.
